Daily Harvest Recall of French Lentil + Leek Crumble June 2022

Daily Harvest Recall
Thursday, June 23, 2022

On June 23, 2022, the FDA announced a recall for Daily Harvest’s French Lentil + Leek Crumble, a crunchy plant-based dish, after it was reported that approximately 470 people have gotten sick after consuming the product. Many experienced food poisoning which caused gastrointestinal and liver function issues.   Daily Harvest is a prepared food delivery service.

From April 28 to June 17, 2022, approximately 28,000 units of the product were distributed nationwide in the United States.

Reports were initially made public via social media by Daily Harvest subscribers, who reported symptoms such as stomach pain, severe cramps, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, dark urine, and jaundice. For some, the symptoms lead to hospitalizations, with infections resulting in liver damage and gallbladder removals. Thus far, the most prominent complaint comes from Abigail Silverman, a fashion influencer and Cosmopolitan’s digital creative director, who shared on social media that she suffered food poisoning after eating the crumbles, which required a night in the emergency room.

Prior to the FDA recall, on June 22, 2022, Daily Harvest posted an announcement to its 600,000 Instagram followers, that it had contacted some “customers who reported adverse reactions” and the company was “collecting data to further the investigation.” The company further posted that even though “all pathogen and toxicology results have come back negative” they were launching a voluntary recall of the product. The company further advised consumers to stop eating the product and dispose of it.

Several days later, on June 27, 2022, Daily Harvest founder and CEO, Rachel Droni, posted on the company’s social media accounts that after 10 days of working with the FDA, state agencies, and multiple independent labs, all tests of the product covering common food-borne pathogens, toxins and allergens have come back negative. While Daily Harvest has not been able to identify the cause, Droni announced that Daily Harvest was expanding its testing regiment to explore other potential sources of contamination.
