Posted in Car Accidents

Beginning tomorrow, November 7,2014, the New York City Speed Limit will be 25 miles per hour. This law was enacted as part of Mayor Bill DiBlasio’s Vision Zero Plan in an effort to reduce fatalities and the severity of injuries resulting from car accidents within the City.

The new speed restrictions will only apply on streets where no other speed limit is posted. Highways parkways, school zones, and other designated areas where speed limits are posted will not be subject to the 25 mile per hour restriction.

According to the Mayor’s office, 291 people were killed in traffic accidents in New York City in 2013. And another 4,000 were injured. The reduced speed limit is intended not only to reduce fatalities and serious injuries for drivers and passengers of motor vehicles, but for pedestrians as well.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that only 5 percent of pedestrians would die when struck by a vehicle traveling at 20 miles per hour or less. This compares with fatality rates of 40, 80, and nearly 100 percent for striking speeds of 30, 40, and 50 miles per hour or more respectively.

Not only does a reduction in speed limit lead to reduced mortality rates in motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents, but it can also serve to reduce the number of accidents overall, since the driver would have had more time to perceive the risk and react.

Please be mindful of the new speed limit in New York City and drive carefully.
