On Sunday, February 26, 2017, a small plane crashed into trees in Southampton, New York. The pilot of the single-engine plane was practicing taking off and landing when the plane crashed.  The crash killed two people onboard the plane and seriously injured a third.

The subject plane was a Navion F aircraft.  The Navion is a rare and difficult plane to fly, especially for beginners. The Navion was made after World War II, and only about 1,200 are currently registered in the United States. Only about six remain of the F model, the model that crashed on Sunday.

It remains unclear how experienced the pilot was, but it is uncommon for students to learn how to fly on the Navion. The features of the Navion, including its retractable landing gear, are not recommended for beginners. However, after one gets used to the systems, it can become easier to fly. Officials have not yet released the names of those onboard, and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a plane accident or through a pilot’s negligence, contact the lawyers at Louis Grandelli, P.C.
