Despite the Mayor’s Vision Zero initiative, New York City continues to be plagued by drivers running red lights and causing injuries and deaths in motor vehicle accidents and pedestrian knockdowns. While the New York City Department of Transportation reports that the average red light infractions captured by red light cameras has decreased by 85 percent since 1994, the number of infractions is still staggering.

According to a recent study by Hunter College, nearly one of ten drivers in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens run traffic lights. Incredibly, more than 613,266 drivers in New York City were caught running red lights by red light cameras in 2014.

On Staten Island, 57,000 drivers were flagged by the red light cameras for blowing through the light. The worst intersection on Staten Island for running red lights recorded was at Richmond Road and New Dorp Lane, counting for nearly 9,500 summonses issued last year. The most dangerous intersection over the past five years in Staten Island has been Richmond Avenue and Arthur Kill Road, averaging 8.5 injuries per year.

If you or someone you know has been injured by a driver’s negligence, call the Grandelli & Eskenasi for a free consultation.
